The OpenOffice Writer can also create Portable Document Format files (PDF), or as a limited WYSIWYG editor for web page creation. It’s native file format is .odt (Open Document Format Text), but it also supports .doc, .docx, .rtf, and XHTML files.
Oracle’s OpenOffice.org is the leading alternative office productivity suite of software, fully open-source and free for any purpose – personal or commercial – and for any type of enterprise, small or large. OpenOffice.org is fully committed to the open-source standard and stores all your office documents in internationally recognized standard formats, making it easy for related open-source projects to access and write to it, as well as other commercially available and recognized formats, such as those from Microsoft Office. OpenOffice is, along with free online office software on the Internet, is one of the main competitors to the dominance of the Microsoft Office line and, because it is an open-source software, its fixes and updates are fast and targeted for consumers (since they are also made by consumers).
