WPS files are most commonly associated with the Microsoft Works word processing application, however, the Kingsoft Office software (an Office-like software that is popular in China) also creates the .wps extension when saving document files that have been created with the software. When opening a .wps file, it is important to know whether it was generated by the Works word processing application or the Kingsoft Office product in order to open the file properly.
Unlike Microsoft Word documents, WPS documents that have been created by Microsoft Works do not have advanced formatting options and they do not usually contain macros. The WPS format has not been used by Microsoft since 2006, since the .doc format was found to be more useful and more versatile.
