Opening DOC files

Did your computer fail to open a DOC file? We explain what DOC files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your DOC files.

What is a DOC file?

Files with the .doc extension are the digital document files that have been created by earlier versions of Microsoft word. While the 2007 and later versions of Microsoft Word currently save documents with the .docx extension, earlier versions of the software save documents with a .doc extension. Although later versions of Word do save documents with the .docx format as a default, these programs can also save and open documents with the .doc file extension.

The .doc format is one of the most popular formats for computer-created word-processing documents. These files can contain text, pictures, graphs and charts.
