A .WRK file is a Cakewalk Music Project file.

The Cakewalk Music Project format stores a complete music project created by Cakewalk's digital audio workstation software. It captures everything needed to build, edit, mix, and play back a multi-track composition: MIDI events, track layouts, tempo, meter and key signatures, mixer settings, audio effect parameters, and references to the audio files that supply the waveform content. This file is used for in-progress work - it is not meant to be a finished mix or exported audio - it enables you to open, continue editing, mixing, or arranging a song.

Older versions of Cakewalk software such as SONAR and Pro Tracks Plus save projects using this format under the .WRK extension. When a project file is opened, it pulls in all audio and MIDI data it references, loads the instrument and effect settings, sets the timeline to the stored tempo and meter structure, and restores the mixer environment. Once finished, users typically export or render the project into standalone audio formats like WAV, MP3, or a bundle that packages all project resources.

Cakewalk Music Project files begin with the ASCII signature CAKEWALK1A at the very start (bytes "43414B4557414C4B1A" at offset zero), which identifies them as belonging to this format.
