What is a DVF file?

A .DVF file is a Sony Compressed Voice file.

Sony's DVF (Digital Voice File) is a sound file format designed specifically for voice recording on Sony IC recorder devices equipped with a USB port. It compresses spoken messages to reduce file size while retaining sufficient clarity for playback. DVF files are created by those Sony recorders when using recording modes labeled SP (Standard Play), LP (Long Play), ST, STLP or HQ depending on the recorder model.

These files are meant to be played, edited and managed using Sony's Digital Voice Editor software. With it you can transfer recordings from the IC recorder to a computer, edit them (trim, delete segments), and even send them back to compatible recorders to play back on the device. Some Sony software such as Memory Stick Voice Editor also supports converting DVF files into Sony's MSV format (which uses their LPEC algorithm) when required for compatibility with other recorder models.

Internally DVF files are identified by specific byte-patterns: they begin with the ASCII string "MS_VOICE" at offset 0, and the ASCII string "SONYCORPORATION" at offset 16 - these help devices and software recognize the format reliably.
