The Winamp Application Detector Plugin is an unobtrusive little tool packaged with a download of the latest Winamp software. It is a browser plugin specifically and currently designed for the recent versions of Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox (other browser integration is yet to be included, although Winamp is looking at Google Chrome for the next iteration, as well as Safari); however, unlike most browser plugins, the Winamp Application Detector Plugin does not do anything, even install a toolbar. It will simply facilitate the detection of an installed Winamp presence in your system, which enables participating websites like shoutcast.com to convey media content as suitable. This means that using the App Detector Plugin, consumers can take advantage of the “winamp://” protocol that lets these sites to deliver content straight from the browser without having to open Winamp itself (similar to such applications like Emule or Itunes).
The Winamp Application Detector Plugin, according to Winamp, does not compromise your security, because it does not send data, nor receive anything else for that matter. It’s only used to facilitate the convenience of the new Winamp protocol. Furthermore, because of this feature, it does negligible impact on the system.
