What are AMF files and how to open them

What is an AMF file?

AMF files have multiple uses, and Additive Manufacturing Format is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Additive Manufacturing Format

These AMF files contain the description of designs used in processes like 3D printing. These files are created by Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to describe the shape and compositions of 3D objects. The AMF format is XML-based and contains more information than just points to create a 3D structure, e.g., color codes and materials.

Important: Different programs may use files with the AMF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AMF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

All known file formats using extension .AMF

While Additive Manufacturing Format is a popular type of AMF-file, we know of 5 different uses of the .AMF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Advanced Module Format

These AMF files are audio files in Advanced Module Format used by Dual Module Player for MS-DOS. Audio files created on the Amiga home computer were referred to as "modules", and DMP was an MS-DOS player that could play back these music files.

Amiga Meta File Format

Amiga Meta File Format stores vector or metafile graphics designed for the Amiga computer and is the native metagraphics format used by the MetaView application and its supporting library. It allows designs made with virtual coordinate graphics routines - such as lines, boxes, markers - to be saved and re-rendered precisely or converted into other vector or metafile formats.

This format is produced by programs employing the AmigaMetaFile library (written in C and Amiga E) and is chiefly used to capture graphical drawings and vector art instead of bitmap images. MetaView, the main application for producing and viewing files in this format, can import many drawing formats and convert them to the Amiga Meta File, and it uses exporters ("drivers") in the library to write the format out in a retained vector form or to convert to other output formats.

Files in this format begin with the IFF (Interchange File Format) container: the first four bytes are FORM, and at offset 7 the internal identifier is AMFF. These signatures identify the file as an Amiga Meta File Format.

Asylum Music Format module

These AMF files contain the music used in Crusader: No Remorse and Crusader, an MS-DOS video game. It uses a tracker-style format. These AMF files get extracted from game resource files.

L3DT Attributes Map File

L3DT writes this file to store a map where each pixel is tagged with one land-quality or land‐type value. It is part of L3DT's internal mapping system and used to control terrain appearance and texture by encoding what kind of land (grass, rock, sand, etc.) covers each spot. The file is produced by L3DT when you generate the attributes map ("Attributes map → Generate map") during terrain creation, often together with the heightfield, water map, texture map, etc.

Cells in the map each contain a 16-bit value made of two parts: the high byte is a climate ID (zero‐based, referring to the climate defined in the project file), the low byte is a land-type ID (one-based; zero is reserved for error). During later steps L3DT uses this map to build texture or mask layers, to determine where different land types appear in textures.

The file is a binary format native to L3DT; a compressed variant (AMF.GZ) also exists. The beginning of the file shows a signature (bytes "L3DT") to identify it, and internally the format belongs to the same group as other "mosaic map" types in L3DT (heightfield, water map, etc.).
