What are PRO files and how to open them

What is a PRO file?

How to open PRO files

Important: Different programs may use files with the PRO file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your PRO file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different PRO openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .PRO

While APE ProSystem Atari 8-bit Disk Image is a popular type of PRO-file, we know of 6 different uses of the .PRO file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

KiCad Project

A KiCad Project (.PRO) file is a legacy project-management file used by KiCad version 5.x and earlier. It stores shared settings and metadata for an electronic design project. When you start a new project in KiCad 5 or open an existing one created in those versions, a .PRO file will be generated or read. It helps coordinate related schematic (.SCH) and board (.BRD or .kicad_pcb) files, maintain the list of component and footprint libraries used, and hold default drawing, layout, display and netlist settings. The project's primary schematic and PCB files derive their filenames from the .PRO base name.

This file is created and maintained by the KiCad software itself. It is read by KiCad when opening the project so that tools like the schematic editor (Eeschema) and the PCB layout editor (Pcbnew) can access consistent shared project-wide values. When a project created in KiCad 5.x is opened using KiCad 6 or later, the .PRO file is automatically converted into a newer project file (.kicad_pro), and new shared settings are migrated accordingly.

As a technical signature, .PRO files start with ASCII text beginning at offset 0 with "version=" and they include identifiable strings such as "LASTNETLISTREAD", "LIBRARIES", "PCBNEW", "THICKNESS", "DISPLAY", "VALVES", "BOARD", and similar keywords that reflect project parameters.

We know that one PRO format is MSX Protracker Module. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
