META File

Did your computer fail to open a META file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .META files.

What is a META file?

Files that contain the .meta file extension are generated by the RealNetworks' RealPlayer application. The application uses these META files to store MetaData for a corresponding video file. This MetaData is used by RealPlayer program to describe a video file that corresponds to the META file.

The META file usually contains information about the corresponding video file, including the duration of the file, the name of the file and a short description of the file, although it doesn't contain any actual video data. This file allows your computer to locate the video that is associated with the META file when you try to play it.
