MET File

What are MET files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a MET file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your MET files.

What is a MET file?

MET files have multiple uses, and eMule Partial Download is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

eMule Partial Download

The MET files are associated with the eMule and eDonkey2000 P2P file-sharing applications that allow users to share files over the Internet, including movie and music files and software applications.

When the eMule and eDonkey2000 applications store cached information, the cached files are saved using the .met file extension.

Both the eMule and eDonkey programs discontinued support after being threatened with legal action by the RIAA.

We know that one MET format is HEC-HMS Metereologic Model Configuration. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different MET openers which you will find listed below.

OmniPage Document

OmniPage Document (.MET) is a legacy proprietary file type used by OmniPage Pro (versions 5 through 9) to store partially processed OCR documents. These files are created when OmniPage begins recognizing text from scanned pages but has not yet completed the OCR process.

When you scan a document or load an image into OmniPage Pro in one of those older versions, the program writes a .MET file as temporary working storage. It keeps intermediate data like recognition progress, layout information, page images, and partial OCR results so that users can later open the same .MET file in that same version of OmniPage to continue or finish the OCR task.

For identification, these OmniPage .MET files begin with the ASCII signature "CCMET" at byte offset 0.
