Opening GSM files
Did your computer fail to open a GSM file? We explain what GSM files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your GSM files.
What is a GSM file?
The .gsm file extension is used for an audio file format, which was created for Internet telephony applications in Europe. The GSM file format is based on the GSM 6.10 prI-ETS 300 036 13kbit/s standard, which is also implemented throughout many European territories. A .gsm file is produced by this lossy CBR sound compression codec.
The audio sample rate of a GSM file is 8000 samples/second, while its data rate is 13 Kbps. The .gsm file format is also used as a global standard format for many mobile phones, and WAV files may also be encoded using this format. These GSM files provide a practical compromise between file size and quality, making this file format an efficient standard for telephone-quality audio.
The audio data in a .gsm file can be viewed by using Awave Studio, which is an audio editing and authoring application that was designed for Windows PCs. These GSM files can also be converted into more standard formats like MP3 and WAV. There are many audio editing tools with support for converting .gsm files into other audio file formats.
