What is a GSM file?

Raw GSM Cell Phone Audio File

The .gsm file extension is used for an audio file format. A .gsm file is produced by the lossy CBR sound compression codec with a sample rate of 8000 samples/second, while its data rate is 13 Kbps. The .gsm file format is a global standard format for many mobile phones.

These GSM files provide a practical compromise between file size and quality, making this file format an efficient standard for telephone-quality audio.

ArchiCAD Library Object File

An ArchiCAD Library Object File (extension .GSM) is a special type of library part used by ArchiCAD to store reusable, parametric building components - doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, etc. - built using ArchiCAD's Geometric Description Language (GDL). These files encapsulate geometry (2D and 3D), user-adjustable parameters and behaviors, interface settings, and subtype classification so that the same object can adapt in plan, elevation, section, and 3D views. These components are created by users or shipped with the ArchiCAD default library.

When an ArchiCAD project uses one of these .gsm library objects, the file remains external and ArchiCAD records a reference to it. Objects can be loaded from external library folder paths or embedded into the project's embedded library. It is possible to edit a .gsm file within ArchiCAD (via the Library Manager or the Open Library Part command), modifying its script, parameters or visual properties. Surfaces - textures and materials - are also stored as a special subtype of .gsm and include both texture image references and fill or hatch properties.

Technically, the .gsm file begins with multiple binary signatures and identifiable ASCII markers to confirm its type. It includes a GUID composed of two hexadecimal parts (Main ID and Revision ID), each used by ArchiCAD to track identity and versioning of library parts. Specific byte patterns (such as "WW" at offset 0, "MYSG" at offset 40, "DAEH" at offset 48) further distinguish it.
