Opening DGN files

Did your computer fail to open a DGN file? We explain what DGN files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your DGN files.

What is a DGN file?

Files that use the .dgn file extension are most commonly associated with the MicroStation construction design software application. The DGN files that are used by this software contain 2D or 3D drawings that are based on the Intergraph Standard File Format or, in some cases, the V8 DGN standard.

The DGN files that are created by this software can be converted to the DWG file format that is used by AutoCAD LDT.

The ArcView software program also uses the .dgn file suffix. These files contain design drawing files that have been created with the ArcView application.

Microstation95 CAD has also been known to use the .dgn file extension. These files contain CAD drawing files that have been created with Microstation95.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
