Opening BSP files

Did your computer fail to open a BSP file? We explain what BSP files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your BSP files.

What is a BSP file?

Files that contain the .bsp file extension are most commonly associated with the Quake gaming software.

BSP stands for Binary Space Partitioning. The BSP files that are used by the Quake software are map files that are used by the games developed with the software. These files contain information about the layout, objects, and map-level resources for the associated gaming application.

In addition to the Quake gaming applications the BSP file format is used by a variety of other gaming software products including Half-Life, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike and Call of Duty.

The Bioshock gaming software also uses the .bsp file suffix. These BSP files contain saved game files and project files created with the Bioshock application.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
