ANS File
What are ANS files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an ANS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ANS files.
What is an ANS file?
ANS files have multiple uses, and ANSI Escape-Sequence Text is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
ANSI Escape-Sequence Text
These ANS files contain the sequences used in ANSI escape sequences. ANSI controls cursor location, color, font styling, and other options on video text terminals and emulators. They get used in the development, scientific, and commercial text-based applications. These sequences embed ASCII escape characters and bracket into the text code.

All known file formats using extension .ANS
While ANSI Escape-Sequence Text is a popular type of ANS-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .ANS file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
ANSYS Model Data
We know that one ANS format is ANSYS Model Data. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different ANS openers which you will find listed below.
HotDocs Binary Answer File
The HotDocs Binary Answer File is a file created by HotDocs that stores responses (answers) gathered during a HotDocs interview, matching each response to the variable names defined in a template. It was used by HotDocs versions 6 through 2008 as a native binary format with the extension .ANS. These files let HotDocs avoid asking questions again when the same variables appear in later interviews or templates; when a template includes a variable whose name matches one in the answer file, HotDocs fills in the answer automatically instead of prompting the user.
Starting with HotDocs 2009, answer files are saved only in XML format, though the .ANS extension is still accepted for compatibility. If a user opens an old binary .ANS file in HotDocs 2009 or later and modifies it, the changes are saved in XML format even when the file name continues to end in .ANS. To cooperate with versions of HotDocs from before 2009, users can explicitly select a "HotDocs 2005-2008 answer file" format when saving, so that the file remains usable by older releases.
The binary .ANS format has since been deprecated. HotDocs' ansFileFormat setting indicates that the ansHDAns (.ANS) binary file format is no longer in active use in newer versions. XML-based answer files (with the .ANX extension) are now the standard.
