What are ANN files and how to open them

What is an ANN file?

ANN files have multiple uses, and Piklib Animation Data is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Piklib Animation Data

Piklib Animation Data is a binary format used by the PIKLib engine to store 2D sprite-based animations for game assets. These animation files encapsulate multiple motion clips ("events"), each made up of frames, image resources, playback speed, looping instructions, and optional sound cues. They enable animated characters or objects to be defined as sequences of visual frames combined with metadata about timing and image placement.

The files are produced by tools associated with the PIKLib engine, which was used for Polish point-and-click adventure games released between 2002 and 2007. The engine reads these files to display animation assets during gameplay. The creation involves defining an animation object, specifying its events, and associating each event with frames, with separate image data for sprites. Some frames may share image content but differ in position; images include headers for dimensions, initial position, and compression type. The format supports looping events, custom playback speeds, and linking sound files to specific parts of animation sequences.

Technically, the format begins with a file header, followed by multiple event definitions (as many as ahEventCount), then image headers and image data blocks according to ahImageCount. Frames reference image data with offsets (both horizontal and vertical offset within the image), defining compound sprites. Color models in images use either RGB565 or RGB555 (two-byte per pixel). Compression schemes are used to reduce file size for graphical assets.

How to open ANN files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ANN file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ANN file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Piklib Animation Data is a popular type of ANN-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .ANN file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Windows Help Annotation

Windows Help Annotation files store user-added comments (annotations) made while viewing a Windows Help file. They are created by the WinHelp system when a person marks up a topic in a .hlp help document to add notes tied to specific topics.

These files are written by WinHelp and read by the same or compatible viewers. Each annotation is linked to a particular topic inside the help file. The annotations are saved persistently so that when that help document is opened again, the comments reappear. The annotation file also keeps a version record so the viewer can manage compatibility.

Internally the file uses the same structure as a Windows Help file's internal file-system called HFS (Help File System). It always contains two special internal files: one "@VERSION" noting a fixed version identifier, and one "@LINK", which lists how many annotations there are and where each annotation belongs (by topic offsets). Additional internal HFS files are present - one per annotation - named using the topic offset followed by "!0", each containing just the text of that annotation. In version 3.0 and later versions, "@VERSION" holds a six-byte signature sequence 08 62 6D 66 01 00. Technical internal identifiers include strings like "@VERSION", "@LINK", and embedded signature bytes at fixed offsets.
