What are AMS files and how to open them

What is an AMS file?

AMS files have multiple uses, and Extreme's Tracker Module is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Extreme's Tracker Module

Extreme's Tracker Module files store song compositions created with the music tracker known as Extreme's Tracker (later Velvet Studio). These are module files used for composing digital music by sequencing patterns of notes and instrument/sample data rather than storing raw audio. Each file encapsulates the sequence of musical patterns, note data, and digital samples or instruments that the tracker plays back using its playback engine.

The files are produced by Extreme's Tracker when a user saves a completed or in-progress song. Editing takes place within the tracker software: notes, effects, instrument settings and sample data are adjusted pattern by pattern. Later, the module can be loaded back into Extreme's Tracker or compatible tracker software for playback or export to standard audio formats. The format is now largely obsolete and mainly encountered in legacy music archives or retro computing contexts.

Files belonging to this format begin with the ASCII header string Extreme followed immediately by a zero byte and then the digit 1 ('Extreme0' plus a 0x01 byte). This signature occurs at offset zero in the file and is used by software to recognize the format.

Important: Different programs may use files with the AMS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AMS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Extreme's Tracker Module is a popular type of AMS-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .AMS file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Velvet Studio Advanced Module System Module

The Advanced Module System Module is a tracker-song file used by the music editor Velvet Studio. It stores complete musical compositions built from samples, instruments, and pattern-based note-and-effect arrangements. It is produced when the user saves a full song in Velvet Studio after assembling patterns, instruments, and the song's order (position list). Players or trackers that support Velvet Studio's modules can load it to play back the music with the arrangements and effects intact.

Velvet Studio creates this file type. Users typically work within Velvet Studio composing with its pattern editor, instrument and sample editors, envelopes for volume/panning/vibrato, and channels/tracks. Once the song is complete, they save it into this module format for archiving, exchange, or playback within Velvet Studio or compatible trackers. Modules in this format may also be converted, rendered to audio (like WAV), or imported into other software that supports Velvet Studio module files.

Files in this format begin with a signature at the very start: the ASCII characters "AMShdr" followed by the byte 0x1A. This signature appears at offset zero.
