What is a VQF file?

A .VQF file is a TwinVQF Audio file.

TwinVQF Audio (extension .VQF) is a lossy compressed audio format developed by NTT's TwinVQ technology and commercialized by Yamaha under the name SoundVQ. The format was intended to reduce file size compared to MP3 while maintaining comparable sound quality. Before newer codecs became common, .VQF files were used for digitally encoded music where storage space or bandwidth was limited.

A .VQF file is produced by encoding digital audio (typically stereo or mono PCM) using the TwinVQ codec. The process first converts the audio into the frequency domain via MDCT (modified discrete cosine transform), then shapes spectral envelopes using LPC-based analysis, flattens interframe spectral variation, and applies weighted, interleaved vector quantization. Through this, much smaller file sizes result - but at the cost of requiring more processing time during encoding. .VQF files can be played on media players that include a TwinVQ decoder. They are rarely used today and are largely preserved in older music archives. The TwinVQ algorithm was later included as a low - bit rate audio tool in the MPEG-4 Audio standard.

For identifying a .VQF file, the file typically begins with the ASCII signature "TWIN" at byte offset 0. Internal metadata is organized into sub-chunks, including a chunk labelled "COMM" at offset 16 and another labelled "NAME" at offset 40, which hold technical details like channel count, sample rate, bitrate, song title, and other metadata.
