LaTeX Style

A LaTeX Style (.STY) file is a user-written package file used in the LaTeX document preparation system to define presentation and formatting rules that can be applied to multiple documents. It contains macros and settings for things such as handling fonts, setting page layout, defining new commands or environments, controlling appearance of section headings, math formulas, lists, captions, spacing, and other stylistic features. Its purpose is to keep style separate from content, so multiple documents can share a consistent format by loading the same style.

The creator of a .STY file is someone writing a LaTeX package or customizing document appearance; users typically load it in a .tex or .ltx document's preamble using the command \usepackage{packagename}. It is not compiled or viewed itself; LaTeX reading a .tex source file processes the .sty when encountered, incorporating all its definitions before typesetting. Style files are widely distributed via CTAN and included in TeX distributions such as TeX Live or MiKTeX; users also write their own for personal or institutional format standards.

The file is plain text written in the TeX macro language. Command definitions begin with a backslash "\" and comments by a percent sign "%". An example of identifying markers in many style files is a \ProvidesPackage declaration near the top, supplying the package name, version, and date. They also often start with \NeedsTeXFormat{LaTeX2e} (or another format directive) to ensure compatibility.
