Files that contain the .rsrc file extension are most commonly associated with Macintosh resource files. The file format was initially created in 1978 for use with the pre-Macintosh Apple Lisa computers.
An RSRC file contains a library of information that is used by the Macintosh OS operating system. This file format made it possible for the Mac OS to separate graphics and text in a file through the use of data and resource forks.
RSRC files are also used in the Apple Xcode environment to develop programs for Mac OS versions 9 and earlier. RSRC files may also contain system themes for the Mac OS X interface.
