What are RSRC files and how to open them

What is a RSRC file?
RSRC files have multiple uses, and BeOS Resource data is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
BeOS Resource data
BeOS was an operating system for personal computers first developed by Be Inc. in 1990. RSRC files on this operating system are resource files containing graphics, localized text, and other assets used by various applications.
How to open RSRC files
Important: Different programs may use files with the RSRC file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your RSRC file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While BeOS Resource data is a popular type of RSRC-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .RSRC file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Macintosh Resource File
The file format was initially created in 1978 for use with the pre-Macintosh Apple Lisa computers. An RSRC file contains a library of information that is used by the Macintosh OS operating system. This file format made it possible for the Mac OS to separate graphics and text in a file through the use of data and resource forks.
RSRC files are also used in the Apple Xcode environment to develop programs for Mac OS versions 9 and earlier. RSRC files may also contain system themes for the Mac OS X interface.
