What is a PSWX file?

A .PSWX file is a Portable Password Depot XML Data file.

Portable Password Depot XML Data (.PSWX) is a file format used by the Password Depot password manager (by AceBIT) to package a user's password database in a portable XML-based file. It is mainly intended to move or back up passwords between devices - especially between Windows desktops and mobile apps - while keeping the entries encrypted under the user's master password.

Files in this format are produced via the Password Depot program using the "Export → Export to PSWX" command. Sensitive fields - passwords and related metadata - remain encrypted, though other parts of the file may be visible in plaintext. Over time this file format has been deprecated: newer versions of Android and iOS apps for Password Depot no longer support PSWX files, and users are encouraged to upgrade their databases to the newer PSWE format using the desktop application.

PSWX files begin with a standard XML declaration version 1.0 with encoding utf-8, and include a root element PASSWORDFILE referencing a schema at "http://www.password-depot.de/schemas/passwordfile/6.0/passwordfile.xsd". Internal fields and tags include keywords such as APPLICATION, ENCRYPTED, COMMENTS, PASSWORDS, HINT, FINGERPRINT, DATETIME FMT, BACKUPINTERVAL, XMLNS, etc., which identify them as Password Depot XML data with encryption applied.
