While Alias PIX Bitmap is a popular type of PIX-file, we know of 9 different uses of the .PIX file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
BRender PIX Bitmap
BRender PIX Bitmap is a raster image file format used by the Argonaut Games 3D engine BRender to store textures for 3D models, scenery surfaces, sprites or other game graphics. These files were generally written during the 1990s for use in video games running on platforms such as DOS and Windows. They are not photographic or scanned image formats but graphics assets used by the game engine for rendering 3D environments.
Programs that read a BRender PIX Bitmap file (for example when a game starts) decode the file's header (which specifies properties such as width, height, and color format) and then interpret the following pixel data. Effects such as color palettes may be applied (especially in lower-bit-depth formats) to correctly map indices to actual RGB colors. Users might find BRender PIX files when extracting or modding game assets; tools like FFmpeg can decode them and convert them to more common image formats.
Files begin with a header that includes a 32-bit big-endian integer giving the header length, a format byte, a 16-bit big-endian width, and a 16-bit big-endian height. Immediately following are chunks of data identified by chunk types (for example/decoding code uses magic numbers 0x12, 0x08, 0x02, 0x02 at offset zero) and pixel data, possibly with palette information for indexed color modes.
