What are PICT files and how to open them

What is a PICT file?

A .PICT file is a Macintosh Quickdraw/PICT Drawing file.

Macintosh Quickdraw/PICT Drawing files are picture files created by Apple's QuickDraw system on classic Mac OS. They record a sequence of drawing instructions (called opcodes) rather than just raw pixel data, so they can contain vector shapes, text, lines, filled areas, as well as embedded bitmapped images. These files were used by Mac applications to save illustrations and screen graphics in a way that could be redrawn or scaled without loss of quality.

PICT files are written by programs using QuickDraw (or Color QuickDraw for newer versions) on Macintosh systems. Version 1 (PICT 1) supports only monochrome graphics and simple operations. Version 2 adds support for color (4-bit, 8‐bit, 16-bit, 24-bit, and even 32-bit color), grayscale, more drawing modes, palette-based and direct color, and the ability to embed compressed bitmap data (for example via QuickTime JPEG codecs) inside the opcode stream. Over time, macOS deprecated PICT in favor of more modern graphics frameworks and now prefers PDF for document metadata and graphic exchange.

Technically, PICT files begin with a 512-byte header (often unused or zeroed) before the QuickDraw command stream begins. The commands are organized with version markers (e.g. PICT v2's opcodes) indicating the format version. Internally the file format uses big-endian byte order. Some PICT v2 files include JPEG compressed tiles wrapped via QuickTime within the drawing instructions.
