What is a PEC file?

A .PEC file is a Brother/Babylock/Bernina Home Embroidery Format file.

Files in the Brother/Babylock/Bernina home embroidery format with extension .PEC are machine embroidery data files used by Brother-family home embroidery machines and related software. They store the actual stitching instructions (needle movements), color‐change information, and often a thumbnail for previews. These files are produced when digitizing a design (turning art or lettering into stitches), or may be extracted from a full PES file for use by machines or software that accept the raw stitch payload. They're good for sewing designs using home embroidery machines, especially older or simpler Brother/Babylock/Bernina models that require or allow bare PEC files instead of full PES containers.

After creation, .PEC files are either loaded directly into compatible machines or embedded inside PES files (as the "PEC block") for broader compatibility. The file doesn't typically carry editable design objects, outlines, or project history - it contains finalized stitch data. Color data is limited to thread palette references (for which each color change corresponds to a thread in the Brother family palette), and the preview thumbnail (if present) is for display only, not part of the stitching logic.

Technically, a .PEC file begins with the ASCII signature "#PEC0001LA:" at offset 0. That header string identifies this exact Brother/Babylock/Bernina home embroidery format's version and front of its stitch payload.
