MDX File

What are MDX files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a MDX file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your MDX files.

What is a MDX file?

MDX files have multiple uses, and Blizzard 3D Model is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Blizzard 3D Model

These files are most commonly associated with the Warcraft games. For example, Warcraft III is a real-time strategy game. Players enter the world of Azeroth and build bases and control units to take over territory. The MDX files used by this game contain the 3D game models and details about textures, meshes, etc.

MDX files can be files provided by games, or they may contain customized 3D models created using a 3D modeling editor. Custom files are often used to enhance a user's gameplay experience and are referred to as "mods".

How to open MDX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the MDX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your MDX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different MDX openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .MDX

While Blizzard 3D Model is a popular type of MDX-file, we know of 4 different uses of the .MDX file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

DBase Multiple Index File

A DBase Multiple Index file is used alongside a dBase table file (often with the extension .DBF) to store one or more index definitions (called tags) for that table. It lets the user define different ways to order, search, or filter records - such as by last name, date, or another field - without modifying the main table. This file is automatically linked to its table when the table is opened, so all its tag indexes are available immediately. One index tag at a time can be the "master" or active index - that is, the one controlling the displayed or logical row order. A production .MDX file (named the same as its table but with .MDX instead of .DBF) is created if it does not already exist.

The file is produced by dBase when you issue commands like "INDEX ON … TAG …" or use its tools to manage indexes. dBase updates the contents of the .MDX automatically whenever data in the table changes - if rows are added, deleted, or updated in indexed fields. It supports both simple indexes (on a single field) and composite or expression-based indexes (combining fields and/or using functions), which lets you define varied search or ordering behavior. Up to 47 index tags can be stored in one .MDX file. Only one of them serves as the current active ordering at a time.

In dBase file headers (in the .DBF), there is a field descriptor flag that indicates whether a field has an index tag in the production .MDX file. There is also a byte in the .DBF header (byte 28) that flags whether a production .MDX file exists.
