JIF File - opening and understanding
Did your computer fail to open a JIF file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .JIF files.
What is a JIF file?
A .JIF file is a Jeffs Image Format bitmap file. An old image file format similar to GIF. The GIF file format uses a patented compression algorithm to reduce the size of the images. This JIF-format was an attempt to create an image format with similar benefits, but using a compression algorithm that is not patented. It never gained widespread use and today the PNG file format is used instead.
How to open JIF files
You will need a program compatible with the specific file you are trying to open, as different programs may use files with file extension JIF for different purposes.

Other file formats using extension .JIF
While Jeffs Image Format bitmap is a popular type of JIF-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .JIF extension.
The JIF file extension indicates to your device which app can open the file. However, different apps may use the same file extension for different types of data. So a JIF opener may not be able to open all kinds of JIF files. In this case, look through both formats to make sure you find the best suited JIF viewer.
JPEG Interchange Format
The JIF file extension is used for image files saved in the "JPEG Interchange Format" file format. It was invented in 1992 and is no longer a widely used format. Newer versions of JPEG image files have taken over, as JIF had limitations with regards to e.g. color definitions that caused problems with compatibility between encoders and decoders (viewers).
