What are ICNS files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an ICNS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ICNS files.
What is an ICNS file?
An .ICNS file is a Mac OS X Icon file.
Files that contain the .icns file extension usually store icon image files. These icon image files are used by the Mac OS X operating system. This file format supports both one and 8-bit alpha channels as well as multiple image stages, including folder icons in both the opened and closed states.
Each ICNS file is associated with a corresponding application. The ICNS file acts as a container file and stores the individual icon and resources within the file container. The user's operating system can scale the icons contained within the files to adjust to the proper display size.
