All known file formats using extension .CWP

While ComicStudio Print File is a popular type of CWP-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .CWP file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Cakewalk SONAR Project

The Cakewalk SONAR Project file with extension .CWP is a project file created by the SONAR digital audio workstation (DAW) from Cakewalk. It stores a working project including settings, MIDI information, automation, mix setups, and references to digital audio used in the project. It is meant for editing, arranging, mixing, and saving progress while producing music or sound, not for delivering final mixed audio by itself.

When using SONAR, a .CWP is written whenever you save your project under the "Normal (Project file)" type. Audio data files are stored separately rather than embedded in the .CWP unless you use a Bundle (.CWB) or ZIP (.CWZ) format which packages audio together. Projects typically consist of multiple tracks made up of clips and events; the .CWP file tracks how they are arranged, what effects and instruments are used, tempo and project metadata.

Inside a .CWP file are recognizable byte signatures that identify it as a SONAR project. For example at offset 24 there are ASCII bytes for "Cakewalk" and around offset 33 the ASCII "SONAR" signature appears. The file also contains key strings like WINDOWINSTANCEDATA, FILESTATS, CAKEWALK, and SONAR.
