What is an AS file?

ActionScript Source Code File

AS stands for Action Script. Files with the .as extension contain source code written in the ActionScript language. ActionScript was developed by Macromedia.

The AS files contain variables and functions written in the language and references to other associated files. These files are often used to create interactive Flash applications. The AS files are generally saved with an associated FLA file. These files are saved in plain text format.

Mac AppleSingle Encoded File

Mac AppleSingle Encoded files are a format created by Apple to make sure that all parts of a classic Mac file - including its main data, resource fork, and metadata like icons and custom file type - are preserved within a single file when stored on filesystems that don't support Mac-specific features. These files are most often written when Mac files are exported, attached to email, or saved on non-Mac filesystems.

An AppleSingle file combines everything needed to fully reconstruct the original Macintosh file: the primary data fork, the resource fork (which can include UI resources, icons, custom settings), Finder metadata such as file type, creator codes, timestamps, and often an associated comment. Software that reads it (including macOS utilities or older Mac file-transfer tools) can extract those parts and restore the file so a Mac application sees it exactly as it was.

Apple defined a fixed structure for AppleSingle. The file starts with a four-byte magic number 0x00051600, followed by a version, filler, and a count of "entries" each with an ID, offset, and length. Each entry points to parts like data fork, resource fork, real name, icon, Finder info, etc. The format uses big-endian byte order.
