What are AMG files and how to open them

What is an AMG file?

An .AMG file is an AMGC Compressed Archive file.

AMGC Compressed Archive is a format used by a DOS-era compressor program developed by Milen Georgiev. Its primary function is to package and compress one or more files into a single archived file, reducing disk space and grouping data for easier storage or transfer. Files in this format are typically generated by Milen Georgiev's AMGC compression tool as standalone archives rather than updates or temporary snapshots of ongoing work.

Users who receive such an archive must use the same or a compatible decompression utility created by or derived from Georgiev's original DOS tool to extract the archived contents. Once decompressed, the archive yields the original files stored inside, exactly as they were before compression - Georgiev's format does not embed any encryption or versioning middleware.

Each AMGC Compressed Archive begins with a fixed identifying sequence: at byte offset zero it contains the hex pattern AD 36 22 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 94 1C. This signature uniquely identifies the archive format and can be used by file identification utilities to detect it.

How to open AMG files

Important: Different programs may use files with the AMG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your AMG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
