What are ABM files and how to open them

What is an ABM file?

ABM files have multiple uses, and Music Album is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Music Album

A wide variety of album-creation software applications use the .abm file extension for the albums that they create. In some cases, the ABM file may also contain thumbnail images for the pictures that are contained in a digital photo album.

There are a variety of applications that use the ABM file extension. HitPlayer is one of the applications used to create files with the .abm file extension.

However, even though several applications may use the ABM file extension for storing album files, it does not mean that the ABM file format of each application is compatible amongst the different applications that use it.

How to open ABM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the ABM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your ABM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

All known file formats using extension .ABM

While Music Album is a popular type of ABM-file, we know of 4 different uses of the .ABM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Audition Music

These ABM files contain the music used in Audition, a video game developed by T3 Entertainment. You get access to a list of music tracks and every level of the game uses a different music track.

Deluxe Paint AnimBrush

These ABM files contain animations or art created in Deluxe Paint. This software was developed for the Commodore Amiga home computer and was later released on other platforms like MS-DOS.

This bitmap graphics editor was used to create Amiga games, animations, and demoscenes. Some artists also used deluxe to make music videos.

This software became the standard for pixel graphics in video games in the years 1985 to 1995.

PhotoImpressions Album

PhotoImpressions Album files are digital 'album' containers created by ArcSoft's PhotoImpression (also used by PhotoStudio). These .ABM files store a list of image files rather than full copies - just the paths to those JPEGs or PNGs already on your disk - along with small thumbnail views, album metadata (like titles or dates), and options for viewing or presenting the collection inside the program.

When you create an album in PhotoImpression, it builds the .ABM file by gathering references to where your photos live, generating thumbnail cache images for quick display, and organizing the photos in a structure the software can browse, edit, display as a slideshow, print, or export. If you move or delete the original images, the album may show broken links or thumbnails because it does not embed or duplicate the full photo data.

The file can be recognized by its signature: at the very start (offset 0) it contains the ASCII letters PALM (bytes 50 41 4C 4D in hexadecimal). It also contains references to files like ".JPG" internally.
