ABP File

What are ABP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an ABP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ABP files.

What is an ABP file?

An .ABP file is an ABComp Compressed Data file.

ABComp Compressed Data files store data compressed by the ABComp tool, a shareware compression program for MS-DOS written by Avinesh Bangar. These files are created when ABComp compresses one or more input files into its proprietary format, typically ending in ".ABP," to reduce size for storage or transfer.

When you wish to retrieve the original content, you use ABComp to decompress the .ABP file, restoring the data to its uncompressed form. ABComp compressed data are not archives in the sense of bundling many files with metadata like dates or directory structure beyond what ABComp itself supports; they are primarily for plain data compression.

Internally a .ABP file begins with the ASCII signature ".AB2" at offset 0. Following that, specific byte patterns occur at fixed offsets - such as a long sequence of zero bytes and certain zeroed two-byte fields at offsets 46 and 50 - used by ABComp (v2.x) to identify and validate its compressed data.
