Unis 669 Module

The Unis 669 Module is a legacy digital music module format used by tracker software in the early 1990s. It stores musical compositions made up of audio samples (instruments), patterns of notes, tempo and pattern-break data, and an order list defining the sequence in which patterns are played. Such a file lets the creator compose multi-channel (typically 8-channel in its standard form) music using sampled sounds rather than synthesizer voices.

Files in this format are created by the tracker program UNIS Composer 669 (written by Jason Nunn in 1994), which is an extended version of the earlier Composer 669 by Tran (Tomasz Pytel). The "extended" version adds extra commands (effects) to the standard Composer 669 feature set, supports higher sample rates (above 22 kHz), ability for finer stereo balance, retrigger effects, and faster tempo control. The typical workflow is that a composer defines samples, arranges patterns of notes across multiple channels, then exports or saves the module as a .669 file to be played back by module players or trackers supporting the format.

For identification, such files begin with the ASCII signature "JN" (hex bytes 4A 4E) at offset 0, indicating the UNIS version. This signature distinguishes them from the original Composer 669 files.
