What are XM files and how to open them

What is an XM file?

An .XM file is a FastTracker 2 EXtended Module file.

FastTracker 2 Extended Module (.xm) files are music module files created by the FastTracker 2 tracker program by Triton. The format bundles audio sample data (instruments), patterns of note events with effects, song structure, and envelopes (volume, panning) so that entire songs are stored in a single file compactly, ideal for sample-based digital music composition. These files are typically written by composers using FastTracker 2 when arranging music with multiple instruments and effects. Listeners play them in module players or trackers without needing special hardware.

Inside an XM file, you'll find metadata like song name, tracker version, number of patterns and instruments, default speed and tempo, followed by pattern blocks that instruct which samples to play and when, with what effects (vibrato, slides, etc.). Each instrument may include multiple samples along with volume and panning envelopes, sample looping, and options for 8- or 16-bit sample depth. Players load these files and mix the sample data according to the pattern instructions to reproduce the song.

A technical identifier at the start of every XM file includes the ASCII header "Extended Module: " at offset 0, followed by the module and tracker names, a byte 0x1A at offset 37, and version number 0x0104 for the current format.
