What is a W64 file?

A .W64 file is a Sonic Foundry Wave-64 Audio file.

Sonic Foundry Wave-64 Audio (.w64) is a 64-bit extension of the standard WAV audio file format developed by Sonic Foundry and now maintained by Sony. It was created to overcome the 4 gigabyte file-size limit in the conventional RIFF/WAV specification, making it suitable for very long recordings, high channel counts, high sampling rates or high bit depths.

The format stores sampled audio data, typically uncompressed pulse-code modulation (PCM), but also supports various codecs and uses cases that regular WAV handles (for example ADPCM). It allows arbitrary sampling frequency, arbitrary number of audio channels, and arbitrary bit depths. Producers of audio recordings such as live sets, multi-channel recordings, or high-resolution audio make use of the format; editing or post-production tools that can read or write very large or high fidelity audio files produce .w64.

Internally the structure resembles that of WAV/RIFF files but with 64-bit fields to hold file size and data length instead of 32 bits, so size limits around 2^64 bytes replace the 4GB cap. A typical identifier at the start is the "RIFF"‐style signature from Sonic Foundry "Wave64" files, including a magic sequence that distinguishes it from standard WAV; for example bytes starting at offset 0 "riff" followed by specific 64-bit identifiers mark the file as Wave-64.
