What are VTT files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a VTT file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.
What is a VTT file?
A .VTT file is a Web Video Text Tracks file.
.vtt (Web Video Text Tracks) files provide closed captions or subtitles for video content played on the web. They contain a series of time-stamped text entries that correspond to a video's audio or spoken content and are typically displayed at the bottom of the video player window.
The purpose of closed captions or subtitles is to make video content accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing and to people who speak a different language than the one used in the video. They also provide a way for people in noisy environments or who have the volume turned down to still be able to follow along with the audio content of a video.
.vtt files are written in a simple plain-text format and can be created using a text editor or a specialized captioning software tool. They can be embedded into a web page using the HTML <track> element, which specifies the location of the .vtt file and the type of content it contains (e.g., subtitles, captions, etc.). When the video is played in a web browser, the .vtt file is used to display the closed captions or subtitles in sync with the video's audio content.
