What are VPL files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a VPL file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your VPL files.
What is a VPL file?
VPL files have multiple uses, and VICE Palette is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
VICE Palette File
A Vice Palette file, denoted by the .vpl file extension, is a file type associated with the Versatile Commodore Emulator, also known as VICE. This file type is used to store color palette information for the emulator.
The .vpl file contains data that defines the color palette used by the emulator to replicate the display of the original Commodore systems. This includes the Commodore 64, a popular home computer system from the 1980s. The color palette is crucial for accurately emulating the visual experience of these vintage systems.
To load a .vpl file in VICE, navigate to the file browser within the emulator. VPL files are recognized as palette files and can be loaded directly from the context menu. This allows you to customize the color palette used by the emulator, enabling a more personalized emulation experience.
Please note that the .vpl file format is specific to the VICE emulator. Other emulators may not support this file format or may use a different file format for storing color palette information. Therefore, .vpl files are not universally compatible with all emulators.

VanBasco Karaoke Player Playlist
The VPL file format is used for a data file type that can be created in the Karaoke Player software, which is a Windows program that was developed by VanBasco Software. These .vpl files are also called Karaoke Player playlists. The Karaoke Player software allows users to open and listen to karaoke audio files and MIDI sound files. These karaoke audio files use the .kar file extension, while these MIDI sound files use the .mid file extension.
A VPL file contains directory locations, metadata details, and other references for karaoke audio files or MIDI sound files that have been saved in the corresponding Karaoke Player playlist. These .vpl files do not contain the actual karaoke or MIDI files. Users are advised to only open and edit these VPL files using the Karaoke Player software.
