What is a VP7 file?

A .VP7 file is an On2 Technologies VP7 Video file.

The On2 Technologies VP7 Video File format (extension .vp7) is a proprietary, compressed video format created by On2 Technologies in early 2005. It belongs to the TrueMotion family of codecs and is intended for storing and playing back full-motion video. The format emphasizes high compression efficiency compared to its predecessors, and it was designed to work well on low-power devices by reducing the computational cost of decoding. VP7 saw use in streaming, video conferencing, and internet media delivery.

Programs that generate VP7 files include On2's broadcaster and encoder tools; the company released a "VP7 Personal Edition" in July 2005 that permits private use without licensing fees. Once saved as a .vp7 file, the video must be decoded by a player or decoder that supports the VP7 codec. Typical workflows involve playback, or conversion ("transcoding") into more modern formats to ensure compatibility.

VP7 data is lossy, operating in YUV 4:2:0 color space with 8 bits per channel. Internally it breaks video frames into square subblocks and uses prediction from earlier frames, plus discrete cosine transform (DCT) for spatial encoding. There are at least two major profiles identified by FourCC codes: VP70 (General Profile) and VP71 (Error Resilient Profile), which include features to handle packet loss or stream errors.
