Opening TEX files

Did your computer fail to open a TEX file? We explain what TEX files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your TEX files.

What is a TEX file?

Files that contain the .tex file extension are most commonly associated with the LaTeX typesetting software application. The TEX files that are used by this software may contain symbols and text that are used to create mathematical expressions.

The TEX files that are used by the LaTeX program are frequently used for the typesetting of a vairety of different math and science applications, such as physics textbooks and engineering books. The .latex file extension may be used instead of the .tex file extension, but the .tex file suffix is more common than the .latex file suffix.

The .tex file extension is also used by the Idealist software application. These TEX files contain datasheet files that are created by the software.
