Sofdec Video
Sofdec Video (.SFD) files are video/movie files created by CRI Middleware's Sofdec system, used in video game consoles like the Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox, and similar platforms. These files store pre-rendered cinematic sequences (cutscenes, trailers, intros) used inside video games. Sofdec is a middleware tool invoked by game developers to encode and embed full-motion video with custom audio into game assets.
The format wraps standard MPEG video streams together with CRI's proprietary ADPCM audio codec (CRI ADX ADPCM) in an MPEG program stream container. Video frames are decoded using MPEG-1 style video, while audio is decoded via CRI ADX ADPCM. To view or use the video outside the game, converters like "sfd2mpg" can extract or convert the video-streamed content, but decoding often suffers from glitches (e.g. blocky output or wrong aspect ratio) because many tools do not fully support all variants of Sofdec files.
Files can be identified by certain internal byte sequences, for example the signature starting with bytes 0x000001BA21000100 at offset zero, and by strings such as "SOFDECSTREAM", ".SFA200", ".SFD200", and "VER." embedded in the data.
