SEW File

What are SEW files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a SEW file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your SEW files.

What is a SEW file?

A .SEW file is a Janome (New Home) Sewing Machine Stitch file.

A SEW file of type "Janome (New Home) Sewing Machine Stitch" holds machine instructions for Janome or New Home-brand sewing machines to produce embroidery or decorative stitches. It stores the exact commands (such as stitch movements, stops, trims or jumps) that guide the sewing machine carriage as it stitches a design. These files are used when sending designs from software to the sewing or embroidery machine so the design can be stitched directly.

The file is generated by embroidery-design software or machine firmware that supports Janome's legacy SEW format. After creation, it is sent to the sewing or embroidery machine (often via USB or memory card) so the machine can execute the instructions. If the machine or software does not support SEW, the design is converted into a more modern format. SewWhat-Pro is a well-known application that supports import, viewing, converting, and exporting SEW files.

Internally the format begins with a fixed header identified by a particular byte-signature: bytes 0x003C00 at offset 1, followed by zero bytes at offsets 5, 7, 9, and a longer signature starting with many zeros and then repeating sequences at offset 11. This signature helps software recognize SEW files before interpreting stitch patterns.
