What are RPL files and how to open them

How to open RPL files

Important: Different programs may use files with the RPL file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your RPL file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different RPL openers which you will find listed below.

While ARMovie Video is a popular type of RPL-file, we know of 6 different uses of the .RPL file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Deluxe Ski Jump 2 Replay

We know that one RPL format is Deluxe Ski Jump 2 Replay. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

Escape Replay Video File

Escape Replay Video files are full-motion video files used in older Eidos Interactive games for storing in-game cinematics and cutscenes. They're created when the game's built-in FMV system encodes video using Eidos's proprietary Escape codec and wraps video and audio together inside an ARMovie container with the .RPL extension. These are not gameplay capture files but rather fixed playback movies that the game plays at predetermined moments.

These videos are produced by the game itself (for example Tomb Raider 1-3, Big Red Racing, Legacy of Kain, and Ian Livingstone's Deathtrap Dungeon) and cannot generally be edited in the game - they are played back by the game engine whenever needed. Outside the game, utilities like FFmpeg can decode or convert them, since recent versions include support for Escape codec variants.

Technically, ARMovie containers store video in one of several Escape codec versions (notably Escape 122, 124, and 130) and audio either as uncompressed PCM or a custom IMA ADPCM variant. The video and audio are split into chunks, each containing both video and audio data or just video, depending on whether audio is present. For instance, the Escape 124 codec frames begin with an 8-byte header with flags and frame size, and video frames are grouped and followed by sound streams. Escape 130 frames carry header signatures (for example 0x0130) and are built from 2×2 pixel block schemes in mixed RGB/YUV color space with differential encoding.
