RGBA File
What are RGBA files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a RGBA file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your RGBA files.
What is a RGBA file?
A .RGBA file is a SGI RGBA Image file.
SGI RGBA Image File is a Silicon Graphics raster graphics file showing color images with a fourth channel for transparency (alpha). It was developed for SGI systems and is used when images need full-color channels - red, green, blue - plus transparency, for layering or compositing.
Such files are created using SGI's image library on SGI workstations running IRIX or similar environments. Once created, either in uncompressed (verbatim) form or using run-length encoding (RLE) compression, they can be read by image-processing tools that support the SGI image format. Typical use includes graphics assets in legacy systems or scientific imaging.
Internally, the file begins with a 512-byte header that includes a magic number (decimal 474), a byte specifying whether compression is used, bytes per color channel (1 or 2), the image's dimensions (width, height) and number of channels (4 for RGBA), minimum and maximum pixel values, an image name string, a colormap identifier, and padding to align to 512 bytes. If RLE is used, offset tables follow the header pointing to compressed scan lines; otherwise the image data follows immediately.
