Important: Different programs may use files with the PRG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your PRG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

All known file formats using extension .PRG

While Akai MESA Program is a popular type of PRG-file, we know of 12 different uses of the .PRG file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Atari ST Program

.prg files are executable programs designed for the Atari ST, a widely popular computing system in the 80s and early 90s. These files enable users to store and run programs on the Atari ST system.

The Atari ST was an all-purpose computer system employed for gaming, word processing, and desktop publishing. It featured the .prg file format which could contain software programs ranging from games and utilities to other applications.

On Windows, running PRG files can be accomplished through an emulator - a software designed to simulate the hardware and operating system of the Atari ST. Popular Windows emulation options for the Atari include Steem and Hatari, enabling users to run programs from the classic system on more modern machines.

It is important to remember that the Atari ST is an obsolete computer system, and the .prg file format is not commonly used anymore. Nevertheless, .prg files may still be employed by hobbyists and collectors of vintage computing equipment.

DBase Program File

A DBase Program File with the extension .PRG is a plain-text source code file written in the dBASE (also known as xBase) language. It is used to store scripts or programs that automate operations within the dBASE system: database queries, forms, menus, reports, conditional logic, loops, and other procedural or object-oriented instructions. Users create .PRG files when designing the logic of a database application or performing repeatable tasks rather than entering commands one at a time.

These files are created and edited with the dBASE program (for example dBASE Plus), using its Source Editor or similar tools. The code in a .PRG file runs when the program is executed via the DO command or by double-clicking the file in the Navigator. Prior to execution (or automatically upon loading, depending on settings), the source may be compiled into byte-code, producing a companion object file (with extension changed, such as .PRO) which the system runs instead of interpreting the source each time.

Technically each .PRG file contains dBL (dBASE Language) statements in human-readable text. It may include comment lines (starting with * or &&), directives such as SET, and FUNCTION or PROCEDURE definitions. When compiled, dBASE replaces the final character of the extension with "O" (so .PRG becomes .PRO) for the byte-code file.
