What are PPL files and how to open them

What is a PPL file?

Free Pascal Dynamic Library

A Free Pascal Dynamic Library file is a compiled library module produced by the Free Pascal compiler using its utility called ppumove. These libraries bundle together multiple Pascal unit files (unit interface plus object code) into reusable code libraries that Pascal programs can link to at runtime. They are most useful for sharing common routines, functions, or modules without recompiling them in each project.

When a developer runs ppumove with unit files (extensions .ppu), the tool generates .ppl files which act as pointers or unit stubs that tell the compiler those units are now found inside a library. Normally alongside .ppl files, ppumove will produce the actual shared library (on Linux a .so file, on Windows a .dll) containing the compiled unit object code; programs then use the .ppl files in source to refer to those units.

Technical details: The .ppl file extension by default is produced by ppumove unless overridden with an option. The internal unit files (.ppu) are manipulated so the compiler resolves references to code inside the dynamic library rather than expecting separate unit code. On Linux when creating a shared library the default behavior excludes static linking unless the "-s" option is passed.
