What are PPM files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a PPM file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.
What is a PPM file?
PPM files have multiple uses, and Portable PixMap Image is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Portable PixMap Image
PPM is short for Portable PixMap and is a file format referred to as the lowest common denominator color image file format.
The Portable Pixmap (.ppm) format is easy to process, write and analyze. These files are considered efficient as an intermediary format when moving image data between incompatible systems.
The format is text-based, which is very uncommon for an image file format and also very inefficient concerning image size. Therefore, this is not an image format you will typically come across.
