What is a PNM file?

A .PNM file is a Portable Any Map Image file.

PNM files are image files in a format called "Portable Any Map". The format, or rather formats, was invented by Jef Poskanzer. Actually, a PNM file can contain an image in one of six different variations of Portable Bit Map, Portable Gray Map, or Portable Pixel Map. On top of that, a PNM file can be either ASCII or binary.
