While IFF Packed Bitmap is a popular type of PBM-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .PBM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Portable BitMap

Portable BitMap (.pbm) is a file format for storing monochrome (black and white) raster images. It was created as part of the Netpbm project by Jeffrey A. Poskanzer. Images in this format store exactly two colors: one represents black pixels, and the other white, with no shades of gray or color. Designers often use it when converting images or processing with simple tools because its structure is extremely simple.

The format is typically produced by programs in the Netpbm suite when converting or manipulating images. It may be used as an intermediate format during conversion between different image types. Because PBM files use no compression and only one bit per pixel (in the binary variant) or ASCII characters in the plain variant, they tend to be larger or less efficient compared to more advanced image formats. Viewing or editing PBM files is done with general-purpose graphics tools or libraries that support Netpbm formats.

There are two variants of PBM files distinguished by how pixel data is stored. The plain version begins with the ASCII magic number "P1" and represents each pixel as a character '0' or '1', where '0' means white and '1' means black; white space between bits is ignored. The binary (raw) version starts with magic number "P4" and stores pixels as packed bits, eight per byte, most significant bit first within each byte.
