What is a P12 file?

A .P12 file is a PKCS #12 Archive file.

A PKCS #12 archive file with extension .P12 bundles a private key together with its corresponding X.509 digital certificate and often the full certificate chain (intermediate and root certificates) into a single encrypted, password-protected file. It allows secure export, transfer, and import of certificate-based identity credentials between systems or applications.

This file is created by tools or systems that issue or manage digital certificates, such as certificate authorities or server administrators. Once generated, the .P12 file is imported into a keystore, certificate store, or trust store where the certificate(s) and private key can be used for tasks like SSL/TLS on servers, code signing, or client authentication. The private key is kept secure by encryption using a user-supplied password.

Internally the file is a binary DER-encoded structure that follows the PKCS #12 / PFX standard (RFC 7292). It contains one or more SafeBags such as keyBag or pkcs8ShroudedKeyBag for private keys and certBag for certificates. Password-Based Encryption protects the private key (and optionally the certificates), using ciphers like AES-256-CBC or 3DES in modern implementations. The file typically begins with ASN.1 DER bytes such as "30 82 …", indicating a top-level SEQUENCE.
