Material Exchange Format Video File

MXF is an acronym for Material Exchange Format, a file format designed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. MXF files are often referred to as the digital equivalent of videotapes.

These files contain video and audio data as well as other data bitstreams. They are created by digital video recorders, cameras, and computers.

The MXF file format is a container format, and MXF files can be converted into other video formats if needed.

Picasa Movie Project

Picasa Movie Project .MXF files are project files created by Google's Picasa application to store instructions for making a slideshow or movie-style compilation of photos, transitions, text captions and timing. They do not contain video or audio media themselves, but all the layout, timing, transitions, fonts, image selections and settings that Picasa will use to produce a movie when the user exports or plays it.

These project files are written only by Picasa, which you need to have in order to create or edit them. When you open one in Picasa, the program reads all its settings (picture order, transitions, captions) and can render the movie, export it to video formats, or edit the project. Outside Picasa they cannot be used to play anything themselves.

Internally, the file is a text-based XML format with tags that describe transitions, timing and styling. The file begins with a signature including the string ".CTransTimeline" at the very start; other keywords include ADVANCEINTERVAL, TRANSITIONTIME, CURRESOLUTION, SHOWCAPTION, FONTNAME, ALBUMID among others.
