What is a MPP file?

Project File from Microsoft Project

A Microsoft Project (MPP) file is a file format used by the Microsoft Project software, which enables users to create, manage, and track project plans, budgets, and schedules. It stores various pieces of project-related information such as tasks, resources, and schedule data.

Microsoft Project allows users to create a visual depiction of their project, including tasks, dependencies and resources, as well as track progress, identify potential problems and make adjustments. This is all done through an .mpp file which stores all necessary data such as task names, descriptions, durations, dependencies and resource allotments.

Not only can Microsoft Project be opened and used as a standalone software application, but it can also be integrated with other Microsoft programs such as Teams, SharePoint, and Excel for collaboration purposes. Saved .mpp files can be stored either on the cloud or locally, allowing multiple users with the software application or compatible viewer to access project information.
